P110-99 Lymphoid
organ alterations enhanced by sub-lethal doses of Coronaviruses
in experimental Trypanosoma cruzi infection in mice
Vérinaud L*,
Camargo IJB, Vassallo J, Sakurada JK, Rangel HA
The effect of sub-lethal
doses of coronaviruses on the course of disease in CBA mice
infected with a mildly pathogenic strain of Trypanosoma
cruzi was investigated. The levels of parasitemia, mortality
rates and the extent of pathological alterations in the lymphoid
organs were determined. The results indicate that the pathologic
profile of T. cruzi infection can be profoundly altered
by subclinical infection with coronaviruses.

P111-99 Interferon
Beta Modulates Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis by
Altering the Pattern of Cytokine Secretion
Yasuda CL, Al-Sabbagh
A, Oliveira EC, Diaz-Bardales BM, Garcia CAA, Santos LMB*
The mechanism of
action underlying the beneficial effect of IFN Beta in multiple
sclerosis is poorly understood. Since experimental autoimmune
encephalomyelitis (EAE) is the experimental model for multiple
sclerosis we investigated the effects of recombinant mouse
IFN Beta on the severity of EAE induced in SJL mice and on
cytokine production by Th1 and Th2 lymphocytes. The results
indicated that rmIFN Beta reduced the disease activity with
an IP dosage of U/day every day, and successfully treated
EAE mice revealed reduced amounts of IFNBeta; no changes in
the levels of IL4 were observed, althouth there was a significant
increase in IL 10 and TGFBeta production. Beneficial effects
on EAE are associated with inhibition of inflammatory cytokines
and stimulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines.Immunological

P112-99 A comparison
of sperm nucleoprotein composition in the genus Physalaemus
(Amphibia, Anura)
Amaral MJLV,
Recco-Pimentel SM*, Cardoso AJ
The spermatozoa
of 8 species from three groups of the Anuran genus Physalaemus
were compared using cytochemical assays for DNA-protein complexes.
The results indicated intrageneric variation in composition
of sperm basic nuclear protein in Leptodactylidae.Cytobios

P116-99 Evaluation
of in vitro toxicity of N,N-dimethyl-2-propen-1-amines isomers

Brito ARM*, De Castro SL, Duran N
The trypanocidal
activities of cis-3-(4'-bromo[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-3-(phenyl)-N,N-dimethyl-2-propen-1-amine
(Vb) and cis-3-(4'-bromo[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-3-(4-bromo-phenyl)-N,N-dimethyl-2-propen-1-anine
(Vg) appeared 6.3 and 3.5 fold more active than the
trans-isomers, respectively. Neutral red uptake (NRU), tetrazolium
salt reduction (MTT), DNA content on V79 fibroblast cell culture
and acute toxicity von E. coli were measured. The IC50
through DNA contents was lower for the cis-isomers in both
series of compounds Vb: 7.8 m M and Vg: 5.2
m M). NRU values for derivative Vb in isomeric mixture
shows the same value as the isolated isomers; however, in
the case of Vg a more significant toxicity of the cis-isomer
was found. MTT values show that Vg is more toxic than
Vb. In both cases, the acute toxicity of the trans-isomers
was higher than that of the cis-isomers. Pharmazie 54:
