Spatial distribution of four sympatric species of hermit crabs
(Decapoda, Anomura) Turra A, Jacobucci GB, Araújo FMP, Leite
FPP* This study was developed in the intertidal zone of Pernambuco
Islet, São Sebastião Channel, Brazil (23o30'S-45o06'W). The
samples were taken monthly, in five transects perpendicular
to the shore line. Pagurus criniticornis was the most abundant,
occupying the lowest intertidal region and muddy substrate.
Clibanarius antillensis ocurred in higher densities than C.
sclopetarius and C. vittatus. These three species of Clibanarius
utilized the substrate differentially and they did not show
a clear pattern of zonation. Clusters were typically monospecific
and presented a female skewed sex ratio, except those of P.
criniticornis. C. sclopetarius was frequently found in shells
of Siratus senegalensis, while C. antillensis and P. criniticornis
used mainly shells of Cerithium atratum. Isolated and clustered
hermit crabs occupied shells of the same species. In: The
