P013-00 Comportamento

P014-00 Daily
activity schedule, gregariousness, and defensive behaviour in
the Neotropical harvestmen Goniosoma longipes (Opiliones: Gonyleptidae)
Machado G, Raimundo RLG, Oliveira PS* We provide an account
of the biology of the harvestman Goniosoma longipes. Solitary
and aggregated individuals rest on cave walls. After sunset
many individuals leave the cave to forage, and return before
dawn. Aggregations of G. longipes contain ca. 34 individuals.
Upon manipulation the harvestmen release a repugnatory liquid,
and aggregated individuals collectively discharge this secretion
toward the aggressor before fleeing. We suggest that gregarious
behaviour in G. longipes is related with the choice of more
suitable microconditions in the cave habitat and/or with group
chemical defence. Journal of Natural History 34: 587-596, 2000.

P015-00 Conditional
outcomes in a neotropical treehopper-ant association: temporal
and species-specific variation in ant protection and homopteran
fecundity Del-Claro K, Oliveira PS* We studied the association
between the honeydew-producing membracid Guayaquila xiphias
and ants. Our experiments revealed that ants reduce the abundance
of G. xiphias' natural enemies on the host plant. Ant-tending
not only increased homopteran survival, but also conferred a
direct reproductive benefit to G. xiphias females, which may
abandon the first brood to ants and lay an additional clutch.
The degree of protection by tending ants varies yearly, and
ant species differ in their effects on treehopper survival.
This is the first study to simultaneously demonstrate conditionality
in ant-derived benefits related to protection and fecundity
in membracids. Oecologia 124: 156-165, 2000. IF = 2.159 *E-mail:

P017-00 Diet
of buffy-tufted-ear marmosets (Callithrix aurita) in a forest
fragment in Southeastern Brazil Martins MM, Setz EZF* Nós investigamos
a dieta e sua variação sazonal de outubro 1994 a setembro 1995
em um grupo de quatro saguis, Callithrix aurita, em um fragmento
florestal (17 ha) no sul de Minas Gerais. A dieta (n =499 registros)
compreendeu goma (50%) e frutos (11%; 27 sp., 16 fam.), e animais
(38%: lagartas 33%, esperanças 5% e cochonilhas 4%). O consumo

P018-00 Collagen-affecting
drugs impair regeneration of teleost tail fins Bechara IJ, Joazeiro
PP, Marí-Beffa M, Becerra J, Montes GS* Regenerating tail fins
were studied in two species of teleosts, Tilapia rendalli and
Cyprinus carpio, treated with Indomethacin, Aspirin, Dexamethasone,
Penicillamine, and Beta-aminoproprionitrile, drugs known to
disrupt collagen metabolism in mammals. Collagen was studied
under the light microscope by the Picrosirius-polarization method
and also under the electron microscope. In general, these drugs
disturbed the deposition and organization of collagen fibrils
leading to abnormally thin or practically absent lepidotrichia
and actinotrichia, and also to disorganized fibrous connective
tissue. The resulting disorganization of the collagenous scaffolding
of the regenerating dermoskeleton was probably responsible for
a secondary effect on blastema distalization and on the general
fin ray patterning that were also observed. The observations
suggest that the stromal histoarchitecture of the regenerate
plays a vital role in fin regeneration and indicate that these
drugs may be useful in studying the extracellular matrix-cell
interactions at the cellular and molecular level. Present findings
also provide a basis for developing different biological models
by using teleost fin regeneration. Journal of Submicroscopic

P019-00 The effect of cyclophosphamide
on brainstem remyelination following local ethidium bromide
injection in Wistar rats Bondan EF, Lallo MA, Sinhorini IL,
Pereira LAV*, Graça DL Long-term cyclophosphamide (CY) treatment
was used in rats subjected to ethidium bromide demyelinating
model to investigate ultrastructurally the drug effects on remyelination
and on central nervous system tissue repair. Brainstem sections
were collected and processed for light and transmission electron
microscopy studies. The rats treated with CY showed greater
amounts of myelin-derived membranes than non-treated rats, suggesting
a delay in the macrophage activity of removing myelin debris.
Oligodendrocyte remyelinating activity showed an incipient and
restricted pattern, with clear predominance of naked axons.
Rare lymphocytes were also found, as well decresead neovascularization.
