Pattern of cytokine secretion by peripheral blood cells of patients
with multiple sclerosis in Brazil Costa PM, Yasuda CL, Scagliusi
SM, Diaz-Bardales BM, Maciel E, Damasceno BP, Blotta MHSL, Tilbery
CP, Santos LMB* Autoimmune T cells play a key role as regulators
and effectors of organ-specific autoimmune disease. In multiple
sclerosis (MS), activated T cells specific for myelin components
produce a plethora of inflammatory cytokines and mediators that
contribute to myelin damage. The production of proinflammatory
and regulatory cytokines by peripheral blood cells from patients
with active and stable MS and healthy controls were examined.
The results show that TNF-a production was somewhat elevated
in active MS with no significant increase in the level IFN-
?, whreas in the chronic phase the anti-inflammatory cytokines
IL-10 and TGF ß increased, accompained by a reduction in IFN?
when stimulated by mielin basic protein. Multiple sclerosis

Cytokine profile and natural killer cell activity in listeria
monocytogenes infected mice treated orally with petiveria alliacea
extract Queiroz MLS, Quadros MR, Santos LMB* We investigated
the effects of Petiveria alliacea extract on the production
of Th1-type and Th-2 type cytokines and on NK cells activity
in normal and Listeria monocytogenes infected mice. Our results
demonstrated that in normal/non-infected mice P.allicea administration
led to increased levels of Interleukin-2 (IL-2) . The infection
alone enhanced INF-g levels and NK cell activity. Treatment
with five consecutive doses of 1000mg/kg/day of P. alliacea
extract, given previously to infection, led to further increases
in IL-2 levels, in relation to normal/non-infected/p.allicea
treated controls, and in INF-g levels at 72h of infection, compared
to infected mice. The production of IL-4 and Il-10 were not
altered with P. allicea extract. NK cells activity increased
at 48 h and 72 h following the inoculation of the bacteria.
When mice were treated with P.allicea previously to infection.
NK activity was higher than that observed at 48h , 72h and 120h
of infection in the infected animal. We suggest that p. allicea
up-regulates anti-bacterial immune response by enhancing both
Th1 function and the activity of NK cells. Immunopharmacology
and Immunotoxicology 22(3): 501-518, 2000. IF = 0.740 *E.mail:
